Fun New Year's Traditions!

Ever since our friend Yabelin shared with us some of the New Year’s Traditions from Panama, I have been intrigued with fun ways to ring in the New Year! I collected these ideas for our family and thought you might enjoy them and try out a few yourself tonight. Note! I found most of this on the internet so I cannot guarantee their accuracy! If you have more information on these traditions or have some of your own we would love to hear them!

I'm off to try to find some yellow underwear!

New Years Kiss

Kissing at midnight - Kiss a loved one at the stroke of midnight to ensure continued affections throughout the year!

Pots and Pans

Banging pots and pans - The belief was that loud noisemaking as the New Year arrived would scare away evil spirits!

Doors

Fling open all the doors in your home at midnight to release last year's misfortunes and let good fortune inside for the New Year!

Around the World
Babylonians celebrated the New Year as early as 4,000 BC and a common tradition was to return borrowed farm equipment. (Check your garage everyone!)

Central and South America

Underwear - Wear red underwear for more love in the New Year, yellow for more money!

Central America and Mexico

Travel - Walk around the block (or outside your home) with a suitcase to bring travel into your New Year!

Philippines

Polka Dots - Wear polka dots and eat round fruit at midnight to ensure a prosperous New Year (the dots signify coins and wealth)!

Spain

Grapes - There are lots of variations on the grape tradition from Spain. What I found was -

1. Wolfing down handfuls of grapes as the clock strikes midnight for a prosperous New Year

2. Eat 12 grapes, one for each chime of midnight, and make a wish with each grape!

3. Eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight which signify the upcoming 12 months. If you get sweet grapes - those months will be sweet, sour grapes... well you can guess the rest!

Greece

Cake - Traditional New Year’s Cake Vassilopita, a sponge cake that has a coin baked in it. My Greek mother-in-law, Carolyne, has passed the torch to our daughter Isabelle this year. Our cakes are cooling right now. On New Years Eve the cake is divided up with one piece per family member. The first piece of the cake goes to God, the second piece to the home and then the rest to each family member, oldest to youngest. The person to get the coin is to have good luck in the coming year!

Ireland

Find a husband - If you are a single woman looking for love, place mistletoe leaves under your pillow to dream of (or catch) your future husband! It can also help you get rid of bad luck!

Japan

Clean up your act - Thoroughly clean your home, pay all your debts and resolve and forgive all disagreements (not a bad idea!). This frees you up to welcome in the New Year with peace and prosperity!

So, I hope this has given you all some ideas on how to ring in 2012! However you decide to celebrate, be safe and enjoy… here’s to a great year ahead!

Jane's first video! How to create a paisley pattern

Hi all! I have been thinking for a while about doing some videos about how I come up with design ideas and the process from idea to product. I personally love all kinds of video tutorials and how-to's. I used to love to watch Bob Ross on PBS! You can imagine how much I love the never ending flow of videos on youtube - so much creativity! I decided to screen capture my process of creating a paisley design. I used screenflow (screencasting and editing software) and had fun learning a whole new program! I am already planning more videos on illustration and design in general. I hope you enjoy this video - stay tuned for more to come!

August Note from Jane - Nantucket

My deadline for this blog post has been looming over me for (literally) months. At BG we have been working through our social media plan and that, of course, includes our live your style blog. I am thrilled to have Brooke on board putting together fun product posts for you all – I hope you are enjoying them! Having Brooke keep our blog fresh (we collaborate behind the scenes on what to blog about) allows me lots more time for the delicious designing! So, our plan is for me to post on the first of each month about… well… anything! "Anything" can be a big scope (hence the above mentioned looming) and at the same time, I feel a pull to connect more with all of you - to just throw myself out there and see what happens!

That said, I am so thankful for our thriving business and to all of you that have been our fans and customers. I thought for this post I would share with you some snapshots from our month on Nantucket this summer. I have had an on-going love affair with Nantucket since my first trip as a little girl in 1973 (I know, many reading this post were not even born yet!). Colin Firth... I hope! So this post is not so much about the Oscars as it is about the talented Colin Firth. I have been smitten with this actor for years. It started with the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice (isn't that how it is for so many of his fans?) And boy was I smitten. I was new to Seattle (from NYC) and a new to marriage. My new husband had left town for the weekend and I found myself at the corner video store (think VHS) and went home with the first tape of Pride and Prejudice. I returned early the next day for the rest. Upon Greg's return he purchased me the set for my birthday and watched the entire production with me numerous times - how sweet is that? All my kids have seen it (I now have the DVD set) and I never tire of it.

I was thrilled to have at a chance to see him again on the big screen and was touched and moved by The King's Speech. While I am no movie critic, I was in awe of his performance. Even though it looks like he is a shoo-in for the Oscar, I'll still have my fingers crossed until they call his name!

Also of interest is the work of his wife, Livia Firth, a dedicated "eco-ist". She writes a wonderful blog for Vogue: The Green Carpet Challenge. The post about her Oscar dress is fascinating - sounds like it will be lovely, and certainly one of a kind!

Notetotes & iPads & Kindles, oh my!

For those of you that follow us, I am sure you are familiar with our notetotes....Well, guess what? Our notetotes fit an iPad or Kindle perfectly! This wasn't something that was created intentionally (we launched notetotes two years before the iPad) but we think of it is a bit of "fun luck"!

Adirondack Style

As the days get shorter and the weather turns colder, the urge to be cozy is a natural! I came across a Trend Alert in Elle Decor that resonated with my desire for comfort! Adirondack Style...it has been around for over 100 years and it is still just as appealing as ever.

An excerpt from the website Adrinoncack Design says: Adirondack architecture dates back to the 1800's. William West Durant has been credited as being the originator of this style, having created rustic estates for wealthy clients in the 1880's. His use of native materials such as birch bark wallpaper and rustic details was then and still is well known. The style quickly spread through the Adirondack Park, and eventually throughout the country, evident in mountainous areas from the Appalachians in North Carolina as far west as the Rocky Mountains.

I decided to dig through our designs and see what had this cozy American feeling. The focus on reds and greens accented with black and brown make it a great style for the holidays! Enjoy.

Looking for a last minute and cute costume? Nancy Drew is the answer! If you can still pull off an above the knee plaid skirt, this costume is for you! It's quick, easy and you probably have everything in your closet. Its great for kids and adults!

- Solid colored flats (penny loafers if you have them!)

Even if you don't have all of the above, you can still make it work. To test my theory on how simple and easy this is, I dressed our youngest up this morning. Charlotte loved being Nancy Drew! We opted for tights over bobby socks and as you can see in the photos she refused to wear shoes - we'll have to work on that for trick-or-treating! She wore a polo style shirt instead of a button down and then all she needed were the "accessories"! While I slightly cringed at pairing the black cardigan with a pink, green and chocolate brown skirt, I got over it - I had to remind myself it is a costume! She loved the magnifying glass and flashlight... after all, how can you look for clues without them!

Holiday at the Beach

If you have been following our blog, you might remember that our family was fortunate enough to spend the month of June on Nantucket Island. It was heavenly and inspiring! I am always working on adding beachy designs to our line - especially holiday photocards. We spent many days at Jetties Beach and our time there inspired this Jetties pattern. The Madras Patch Bright is new to our Holiday Collection and I used some of our photos from Jetties in the samples. Pedal or Peace?

What about Pedal for Peace? Sometimes I forget that it's ok if my Boatman Geller life and personal life overlap. They sort of merge in my daily life... so why not really throw it out there? A friend of mine, Maryjane Behforouz, started an incredible event in Indianapolis last year - Pedal for Peace - that "supports organizations throughout the world that are committed to peace through education, especially for girls and women."

Money raised this year at the October 2nd event will be split between Greg Mortenson's Central Asia Institute {author of Three Cups of Tea} and A.W.A.K.E.N. {Afghan Women’s And Kids’ Education & Necessities}

Even after all our hard work this year, and with the event just around the corner, I still felt like I should do more. That's when I decided to throw caution to the wind and reach out to our wonderful BG followers and give them a gift if they would be generous enough to make a donation.

At the beginning of summer we did a little product research on monogramming our notetotes. Since the tote has a stiff shell to protect the paper, traditional stitching on the front pocket isn't an option. We tried out a transfer monogram and then sent them off to some great customers and industry leaders. We were thrilled with the feedback and especially this great blog post from Whitney English Kolb of Whitney English and English Paper Company. I just love the styling for the photos!

We are extending this monogrammed notetote for only $10 extra for a limited time. If we continue to get positive feedback, we will add it to our line! I Spy...

How fun are these porthole doors? I love all the charming doors and walkways of 'Sconset on Nantucket. I spent a lovely afternoon (alone!) taking photos while exploring the houses, winding streets and almost hidden bluff walks.

It is fair to say I have been obsessed with the entire beach house set for the fabulous movie Something's Gotta Give - and in particular love the swinging dining room door with the porthole (image bottom left).

As I was reviewing my photos of these doors I remembered the fun books by Wendy French and the delicious cover illustrations by one of my all-time favorite illustrators Edwin Fotheringham (top right).

So this is really an "I Spy..." of some of my favorite things!

We have been playing a lot of "I spy" when out to eat or waiting for something... anything to keep our four year old engaged! I realized as I was photographing the things that caught my eye on Nantucket I was playing the game with myself... I spy an anchor... I spy pink... So I decided to post some "I Spy" images that inspire me. The first up was the most difficult to find on island - but a favorite of mine - yellow!

Locks of Love - A post from Becky

Are you familiar with the organization, Locks of Love? I am so impressed - this is an excerpt from their website:

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

I am also proud to say that my 14 year old daughter, Sarah, had 11" of her hair cut off and donated it to Locks of Love. Sarah has always been blessed with beautiful red hair and a while ago we started talking about her doing this. She has been growing it out (you need at least 10" to cut off) and then she wanted it long enough that it could be styled! Last week she went to the Bobby Cooper Salon in Indianapolis where her hairdresser, McKenzie, chopped it off! I have to admit, it made me weepy. I have posted before and after pictures as well of some shots of the cut.

What was I thinking when I decided I would have time for 3 leisurely posts about the show?! I think it was because I was still riding the wave of such a fantastic show experience. Well it feels as if I have been left behind in Indianapolis this past week as most everyone takes off for a spring vacation.

- Living like I am single again (I think I am up to 5 empty coffee mugs in our master bath)
- Sharing cold beers with one of my best friends Jen who was in town from Chicago
- Watching Julie & Julia in bed with our 3 year old late last night (loved it!)
- Delicious warm and sunny weather!
- Having my Mom and Dad close by so they can help out with "babysitting" and just to hang out
- An unexpected bit of fun press... I'll post in my next blog!

I know that there is still snow on the ground and the temperatures are still are in the 30's but that's ok with me...why? Because today is March 1st! It really doesn't matter what is happening outside on March 1st, only what's happening in my mind. March 1st means that spring is just around the corner (it may be a long corner but a corner nonetheless!) When I left the house today, the air felt different and there were birds singing. This morning the weatherman said we would be in the mid 40's by the end of the week which is good news! Have you ever noticed how warm 45 degrees feels in winter and how cold it feels in fall?

Today also marks the change of my clothing choices...more pink and less brown. Lots of layers but in bright colors - whatever it takes to get through these last gray days of winter!

Before we show you some of our new designs, we want to offer Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints! As disappointed as we were to lose, there are quite a few Indiana connections to the Saints - Drew Brees (Purdue University), Tracy Porter (Indiana University) and Courtney Roby (North Central High School - our alma mater!). I guess it makes losing a bit easier!

We've had a lot of people asking for a peek at what's to come so we thought we'd post a few things today. We are really excited that we are now offering custom, personalized recipe cards and laminated placemats through our Custom Catalog. Here are some of our favorites but the combinations are truly endless!

Superbowl Madness!

Of course, having been born and raised in Indianapolis and living here once again, we are huge Colts fans! Here is a picture of our mom, Lynn Boatman, with Colts tight end, Dallas Clark! Not only is she the #1 Boatman Geller fan, she is also a die-hard Colts fan!

Here is a little Friday Inspiration on Monday! Since Greg and I are hosting Thanksgiving Dinner this year it's time to pull out my grandmother Mimi's silver and teach my kids how to polish! I was so inspired by the delicate pattern on the flatware and in particular love my grandmother's monogram! I think it would make a lovely monogram style for paper goods and as soon as I have a bit of free time, I will be comping it and I will post for you to see! (note to self... see if the monogram style is copyrighted by the silversmith before offering to our customers!)

I am always inspired on Fridays - I think it goes back to the school week! Now with kids, it's so nice to sleep in on the weekends! Because of school schedules, Friday is also my only full day at the office so it seems like a good time to post a blog. Each week I will be sharing with you the things that inspire me.

Earlier this week I was sorting through and old box filled with mementos of my life in NYC post college. I lived in the city just over 6 years and I was fortunate enough to work in the Creative Department at Elizabeth Arden Corporate the whole time. I will be forever grateful to everyone in that department that gave me so many wonderful opportunities!

I have always been inspired by illustrations and I found this envelope filled with little cut outs that I had saved. These are over 15 years old (yikes!) and I still love them. I hope you find them inspiring!

Even though our family has never used Thanksgiving Invitations I thought it would be fun to pull some together! It can be an amusing challenge to go through our Everyday Personalization Catalogs and see what designs would work for certain holidays. Our stacks of personalized notepads before they are put through the padding machine. This is a great time of year for our notepads whether you have them personalized or just buy them plain. I love fall...the leaves changing colors and the days getting cooler - Ok...I'm lying! I do love the leaves changing colors and the opportunity to wear jean jackets and sweaters but, fall means just one thing to me...winter is right around the corner! I know I should like fall - other people do. My birthday is in the fall, I always wanted a fall wedding (August was as close as I got) and I love football...I just hate being cold! Right now, sitting in the office writing this, I am cold and I can't warm up - even a Starbucks Vanilla Steamer hasn't helped! It is now officially "sweater weather" so here are some of my favorites for this season...
* This cardigan from Vineyard Vines is one of my favorites - it's perfect for running around during the day and cross country meets in the afternoon!

* This is another one of my "must-haves" from J. Crew - I love the fitted style!

* Finally, how cute is this poncho from J. McLaughlin!? I think I'll wear it to the school bonfire Friday night!

Did your school have a crest? I always wished I'd gone to a school with a cool crest, darn it! I guess you could say I've been crest-obsessed for a while now. Peter Beaton on Nantucket, peterbeaton.com, has a crest that I adore! Thus inspired, I decided it was time for Boatman Geller to create our own collection of crests.
You can see by my sketches where it all began - the hard part was narrowing it down! In the end, we created 5 crests in our Everyday Collection - golf, lacrosse, tennis, lobster and princess that are available as flat cards or foldovers.We also have 2 more crests that we created for Holiday as digital photocards! Check them out and since the options are limitless, let us know what kind of crest you'd like to see or how to use the current ones - notepads, plates, luggage tags, winetags - we're open to ideas!

Inspired by 101 Dalmations

Backgrounds from animated movies are one of my favorite sources of creative inspiration. I adore the look and feel of Disney's 101 Dalmations released in 1961. The color palette and illustration style are amazing - so satisfying to watch the special features on the newest DVD and to learn about the process.

I stumbled upon this blog dedicated to animation backgrounds, and while I was disappointed to see that the author, Rob Richards, was no longer posting, his blog is a treasure chest of visual inspiration! Check out all of his posted 101 Dalmation backgrounds here!

Chevron for Holiday

Chevron patterns are everywhere and we thought they would be the perfect pattern to use in our Holiday Custom Collection for 2009. We just shipped our CD images to our accounts and like every new release, we hope that you all love the new designs and colors as much as we do!

Often inspiration comes from some of my favorite magazines, and sometimes it is validation that we are on the right track! My new Coastal Living came in the mail today and I was thrilled to see the feature on chevron / zig zags. I loved seeing the Brown and Seafoam pillows from Twinkle Living that match our new Chocolate and Slate Custom Chevron Photocards! While you all get to pick any combo you want from our holiday palette, this was a favorite of mine.

Summer Sightings: 3 of 3

Swim caps, sail boats, and hammocks are now just a memory. Text books, school buses, and desk chairs become a new reality.

After a wonderful vacation, the Geller family is sad to bid the summer farewell, but excited for our most expansive holiday season to date. "We're so confident in our new, 2009 Holiday Collections that we've added tons of our past Holiday Collections to a Holiday Blowout Sale exclusive for Boatman Geller Dealers," Greg told me while he was nursing a nasty sun burn.

Alligator Advice

Our phone company recently made us aware of an international (expensive) phone call made from our offices in Indianapolis, IN to the Bahamas. As soon as we heard this we quickly searched our phone log and found the exact call. It was Boatman Geller's new Alligator, Mitch, calling our old Preppy Alligator for some interesting advice. We transcribed the conversation for your enjoyment below.

"Hey Preppy, it's Mitch! You know, Mitch-the new guy. Hey, I wanted to see if I could get a little bit of your time to ask you something? What do you say?"

"Mitch?... Oh, Oh yeah, Mitch! I like that name. Mitch Mitch Mo Mitch Bannana Fanna Fo Fitch Me Mi Mo... Yeah, I've got a little bit of time, but I'm having trouble hearing you over the music at Senor Frogs. What's up?"

"Thanks! Ok, here it goes... Well, do you remember summer time not really ever feeling like summer at Boatman Geller? I mean it's almost like we skipped my favorite time of the year and went straight to winter with holiday album this, and new holiday cards that. Will I ever get a summer?"

"As soon as you leave! Hahahahaha... This is the first time I've ever had an actual summer and it's amazing! That is why I'm in the Bahamas hanging with some of the most well known celebrity alligators in the business my friend. In fact, here comes the one guy from La coste now. Actually, he doesn't look very happy. Oh boy..I should go. Gotta Run Mitch. Hang in there it'll be over soon."

With the way the economy is, many people are limiting their travel this summer. In fact, I've even heard the concept of staying home and finding something enjoyable to do around the house called a "stay-cation". Well, if a "stay-cation" is in your future or just some extra time, we'd like to introduce you to an author that will surely transport your mind to the wonderful land of Martha's Vineyard, Mr. Philip R. Craig.

Craig's widely known Martha's Vineyard Mysteries showcase his ability to capture every detail and transcribe them to his readers making you feel like you're right there. Although Craig passed in May of 2007, his large collection of books remains a staple in the Geller book collection and those of his adoring fans.

Craig's inspiration for writing a new mystery novel every year from 1989 - 2007 (except 1) went hand in hand with his love for Martha's Vineyard. His style of writing and his style of motivation make Martha's Vineyard Mysteries a "must" on the Boatman Geller summer reading list, because he inspires us to live our style.

Do you salt your napkin?

Summer is here, it's hot, and we're unsure if there is a better way to cool yourself down than with a refreshing beverage. Even more so, we're unsure why people salt their napkins. At our most recent all-staff meeting, we got a little off topic and onto this phenomenon, which divided the room almost equally between salters and non-salters. In fact, the majority of the non-salters had never even heard of it before. Today's post is of extreme educational importance for both our staff and readers to determine if salting 'is' or 'is not' part of living their style. Here's what we found out:

The Scientific Explanation is a bit over my head, but it's rather interesting.
A Video of the trick actually performed was quite appealing to those who had never heard of salting a napkin before.

Young Charlotte Geller has gotten antsy for summer and is clearly ready for the beach (or here in Indiana it's the lake!). That means one thing for the Gellers... it's time to get ready for summer!

We're modifying the use of our blog some to suggest ways in which you, our follower and fan, can live your style in addition to using Boatman Geller Collections.

Can you believe this Extra Large Land's End Canvas Tote is only $27? Neither could we! It's so big Jane will be able to fit everything in it including: towels, sandals, sunscreen, games, etc.. and still have room for a Geller Girl or two. :-) Too bad she hasn't been able to use it yet. Oh well, at least they're ready!

Sadly, the Boatman Geller preppy alligator has raised some eyebrows with LaCoste and has been deemed to be somewhat confusing when comparing it to the LaCoste icon. Today, we're honoring the retirement of a well noted figure in the Boatman Geller Collections , the preppy alligator. The gracious people at LaCoste have allowed us to run through of our existing inventory (rather than trash it), which gives our preppy alligator one more solid run at immortality.
